The Terryville Friends of the Library were recently honored with two major Focused Project awards from the state Friends of the Connecticut Libraries. The awards recognize projects that raise community awareness of the library. Entries to qualify for the award were prepared by Joan Mischke and Sandy Klimkoski. The awards' ceremony was held in mid- June at Chapman Hall at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. Mrs. Nancy Henderson, local businesswoman and treasurer of the Terryville Friends, was honored for the beautiful dollhouse that she painted, repaired, and redecorated, The house, formerly a mini- Victorian house, became a modern but beautiful traditional mansion. Her painstaking efforts were driven by a passion for the hobby of creating dollhouses. The house was eventually used as a very successful fundraiser. The second award went to the Friends group for the transformation of the Wilcox house into the Booktique, the used book store run by the Friends. The house is conveniently located next to the public library. Most of the Friends agree that all the hard work that was devoted to the Booktique during the hot, steamy summer of 2012 was a labor of love!
Congratulations to our local Friends!

Looking for a new way to help the library? Adopt-a-Shelf is a volunteer opportunity designed to keep materials in correct order and dust free. Interested volunteers donate time to keep one section of the library neat and orderly by "adopting" that section. Volunteers chose a favorite topic or type of material.Twce a month, the volunteers spend time checking that the section they have adopted is in the correct order.
Circulation of library materials has increased 15% since July 2008. With over 57,000 volumes in the library's collection, it is difficult to keep the shelves straight with so much use. Some people don't put items back in the proper spot when they are browsing. Sometimes topics are so popular, the shelves just look messy. Our library pages work diligently to put materials back when they are returned, but "shelf reading" for proper order is time consuming. When every item is in the proper place, everyone - the librarians and the patrons - can find the materials they need and the pages can put materials away more quickly.
Volunteers should be adults or teens ages 15 years or older, detail and order oriented, and be able to work independently each month. We also ask that volunteers be able to commit at least 2 hours a month for a minimum of 6 months. See the Reference Librarian, Lisa Bower Courtney, to sign up! Or e-mail me @ email@example.com .
