Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Terryville Public Library is a voluntary, non-profit group of interested citizens whose purpose is to enhance the value of the library to the community. To accomplish this, the Friends undertake projects to publicize the Library and underwrite the cost of speakers, events, and useful, special library materials. The Friends focus on projects that lie outside the scope of the Library’s budget.
The Friends underwrite many events including the Winter and Summer Reading Programs, our annual Santa Visit, and Senior Citizen programs. The Friends also purchase materials for the library. In the past year, a multimedia projector and sound system, two new children’s computers and Accu-Cut dies and die machine parts were purchased by the Friends for the library’s benefit.
The Friends are able to carry the burden of these costs through a commitment to fundraising. Yearly fundraising events include an annual Book and Bake Sale held the first weekend in May, a Basket Raffle an on going lobby book sales and the sale of bags, note cards, T-shirts, sweatshirts, holiday ornaments and cookbooks. The Friends also sell Entertainment Books (Hartford County) during the fall and early winter. Donations of time and funds from local residents, businesses, and other organizations have also provided much needed support for Library programs.
For more information, or to learn how to become a member, visit the library or attend our next Friends meeting.
The Friends of the Terryville Public Library meet the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm.

Adopt-a-Shelf
Looking for a new way to help the library? Adopt-a-Shelf is a volunteer opportunity designed to keep materials in correct order and dust free. Interested volunteers donate time to keep one section of the library neat and orderly by "adopting" that section. Volunteers chose a favorite topic or type of material.Twce a month, the volunteers spend time checking that the section they have adopted is in the correct order.
Circulation of library materials has increased 15% since July 2008. With over 57,000 volumes in the library's collection, it is difficult to keep the shelves straight with so much use. Some people don't put items back in the proper spot when they are browsing. Sometimes topics are so popular, the shelves just look messy. Our library pages work diligently to put materials back when they are returned, but "shelf reading" for proper order is time consuming. When every item is in the proper place, everyone - the librarians and the patrons - can find the materials they need and the pages can put materials away more quickly.
Volunteers should be adults or teens ages 15 years or older, detail and order oriented, and be able to work independently each month. We also ask that volunteers be able to commit at least 2 hours a month for a minimum of 6 months. See the Reference Librarian, Lisa Bower Courtney, to sign up! Or e-mail me @ lbcourtney@biblio.org .
